Car Finance Total Cost Calculator

Add up a car finance deal’s deposit, monthly payments, final payment and fees. Use an actual quote or estimate repayments from a nominal interest rate to see the total paid to own the car.

How to use Car Finance Total Cost Calculator

1. Choose the currency used for results. 2. Use quoted-payment mode for a real offer. If estimating, enter the nominal interest rate rather than an APR that already includes fees, and include the final payment if you plan to own the vehicle. 3. Change a value to update the results, or select Calculate. Review the chart and notes with the total. 4. Use Copy results, Share results or Download result graphic to keep the answer. Shared links include your figures. 5. Reset restores the editable example inputs.

Why use this tool?

A manageable monthly payment can hide a large final payment or a much higher total price. Adding the full agreement cost helps you compare what is paid to own the vehicle rather than judging the offer from one monthly figure. A PCP agreement can also have a return-the-car option. This calculator’s ownership total assumes the balloon is paid. A return comparison would need its own mileage, condition and fee assumptions rather than silently leaving the balloon out of a claimed ownership price.

How the calculation works

Quoted mode: total paid = deposit + monthly payment × number of payments + final balloon or purchase payment + additional fees. Cost above cash price = total paid − vehicle cash price. Estimate mode sets loan principal to cash price minus deposit. For monthly rate r and n payments, the payment is (principal − balloon ÷ (1+r)^n) × r ÷ (1−(1+r)^−n). At zero interest it is (principal − balloon) ÷ n. The nominal annual rate is divided by twelve. Fees are added separately; this is not a regulated APR calculation.

Example

A £3,000 deposit, 36 payments of £300 and an £8,000 final payment add up to £21,800 before other fees. For an £18,000 cash price, that is £3,800 above the cash price. The monthly payment alone does not show that total.

Practical tip

Check whether a quote includes its administration or purchase-option fee before entering an additional fee. Add it once, and keep the quoted-payment mode for offers with lender-specific terms.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for a deal with a balloon payment?

Yes. Enter the final payment that would be needed to own the vehicle. The result includes it in the ownership total.

Can I put APR into estimate mode?

Use the nominal contract interest rate for that mode. APR can already include fees and uses a regulated comparison method, so treating it as nominal interest while adding fees can distort the result. An actual quoted payment is a better input for a real offer.

Does the result include returning the vehicle instead?

No. The displayed total is the ownership route with the final payment included. Returning a vehicle requires a separate check of the agreement, mileage, condition and applicable charges.
