Circle Area Difference Calculator

Compare the areas of two circles from their radii. The signed result is the second circle’s area minus the first circle’s area.

How to use Circle Area Difference Calculator

1. Choose Measurement Unit, then enter First Radius, Second Radius without a unit suffix. 2. Use the selected ordinary, square or cubic unit for each measurement as explained below; changing the selector relabels inputs and does not convert them. 3. Select Calculate, or press Enter, and read area difference. 4. Select Select Copy result to copy the answer, or Reset to clear the form.

Why use this tool?

Measure how much flat area you gain or lose when changing a round design, or find an annular area when the second circle surrounds the first.

How the calculation works

Area difference = π × second radius² − π × first radius². Both radii use the same length unit. Results use up to six decimal places. Tiny nonzero results below 0.000001 use scientific notation with six significant digits. Browser floating-point arithmetic can introduce small rounding differences. Inputs and calculated magnitudes must not exceed 9,007,199,254,740,991. Negative physical measurements and arithmetic underflow are rejected. Zero dimensions are treated as a degenerate limit where the formula allows them; divisors and sides of an actual triangle must be positive. Example

First Radius = 3 cm and Second Radius = 5 cm give 50.265482 cm². Reversing them gives −50.265482 cm².

Practical tip

For a ring, enter the inner radius first and outer radius second. Keep the circles concentric when interpreting the difference as a ring area.

Frequently asked questions

What does a negative area difference mean?

The second circle is smaller. The minus sign preserves the comparison direction; equal radii return zero.

Is this the gap between the circles’ edges?

No. It subtracts their areas. The radial gap would be the outer radius minus the inner radius, measured in ordinary length units.

Does changing Measurement Unit convert my numbers?

No. The selector states the unit of the numbers you enter and labels the answer. Convert measurements first when changing units. Area inputs use square units and volume inputs use cubic units; result precision follows the rounding method above.
