Cost of Living Comparison Calculator
Compare the household costs of two locations or two sets of bills. Enter your own housing, shopping, transport and other costs, then convert their payment frequencies to a shared monthly and yearly view.
How to use Cost of Living Comparison Calculator
1. Choose the currency used for results. 2. Name the two options, enter corresponding costs and frequencies, and use an exchange rate only when the B figures are in another currency. 3. Change a value to update the results, or select Calculate. Review the chart and notes with the total. 4. Use Copy results, Share results or Download result graphic to keep the answer. Shared links include your figures. 5. Reset restores the editable example inputs.
Why use this tool?
A lower rent can be offset by higher commuting costs or a more expensive food shop. Looking at comparable categories together is more useful than deciding from one bill. The same table can compare current household bills with a proposed set of providers. The calculator uses your figures rather than a city ranking. That gives you control over the kind of home, transport and shopping you actually expect to use. Costs in another currency can be converted with your chosen rate, but there is no live rate or local-price feed behind the examples.
How the calculation works
Each A and B payment is multiplied by its yearly frequency: 365 daily payments, 52 weekly, 26 fortnightly, 13 four-weekly, 12 monthly, 4 quarterly or 1 annual. A costs are summed directly. Each B yearly cost is multiplied by the entered number of A currency units per one B currency unit. Monthly totals are annual totals ÷ 12. The difference compares total entered costs. Taxes, salaries, benefits, buying fees and one-off moving costs are not added automatically. Include what is relevant to your own comparison and avoid counting the same bill in two rows.
Example
The example current household has £1,000 monthly housing, £90 weekly groceries and £150 monthly transport: £18,480 a year. The alternative totals £19,520 with its entered costs. At an exchange rate of 1, the difference is £1,040 a year, or £86.67 per average month.
Practical tip
Compare similar housing and shopping choices. If one location needs a car while the other does not, include that difference instead of assuming transport costs match.
Frequently asked questions
Does this fetch current prices for a city?
No. It compares the costs you enter. Use recent quotes or bills for the kind of household you are planning rather than assuming the starting examples describe either city.
Can I compare monthly bills instead of places?
Yes. Name A “Current bills” and B “New bills”, add matching services and choose their actual payment frequencies. That also handles an annual charge on one side and a monthly charge on the other.
Which way round should the exchange rate go?
Enter how many units of A’s currency equal one unit of B’s currency. For example, if one unit of B buys 0.85 units of A, enter 0.85. Use 1 when both columns use the same currency.
