Home Insulation Savings Calculator
Turn an expected reduction in heating costs into monthly and yearly savings. Add insulation cost, grants and any annual extras to estimate simple payback for the scenario you are considering.
How to use Home Insulation Savings Calculator
1. Choose the currency used for results. 2. Use space-heating usage cost and a saving percentage from an assessment, quote or clearly labelled scenario. Enter the full installation cost and any confirmed discount. 3. Change a value to update the results, or select Calculate. Review the chart and notes with the total. 4. Use Copy results, Share results or Download result graphic to keep the answer. Shared links include your figures. 5. Reset restores the editable example inputs.
Why use this tool?
A quoted installation price is easier to assess when you compare it with the annual saving it is expected to produce. The calculator shows how those two figures relate, and how much a grant changes the upfront amount to recover. The important assumption is the heating-cost reduction. The tool does not know your walls, loft, ventilation or current insulation, so it cannot infer a percentage from an address. Use a property-specific assessment when you have one, and try a range rather than relying on the starting example.
How the calculation works
Annual gross saving = annual space-heating usage cost × expected saving percentage ÷ 100. Annual net saving subtracts the annual extra cost or maintenance allowance. Net installation cost is the installation cost minus a grant or discount. Simple payback divides net cost by a positive annual net saving. Monthly net saving is the annual amount ÷ 12. The projection assumes the same savings and prices each year. Standing charges should not be included in the heating-cost base because the assumed reduction does not remove them.
Example
An illustrative £1,000 space-heating usage cost reduced by 15% gives £150 annual savings. With a £2,000 installation cost and no grant or annual extras, simple payback is about 13.33 years. The 15% figure is a scenario input, not a prediction for a particular home.
Practical tip
Use the total quoted project cost, including work needed to complete the installation. A grant reduces the upfront cost only if it actually applies to your project.
Frequently asked questions
Where should the saving percentage come from?
Use an energy assessment, installation quote or your own explicitly chosen scenario. The calculator does not estimate the saving from a property type or postcode.
Can I include a grant?
Yes. Enter a confirmed grant or discount up to the installation cost. Eligibility is not assessed by the calculator.
Why is simple payback different from a full investment return?
Simple payback measures how long a repeated annual benefit takes to cover upfront cost. It does not discount future money, forecast prices or model financing and resale value.
