Turn measurements into a material estimate

Use consistent units for dimensions and coverage. A quantity tool turns area or volume into a material estimate; a cost tool multiplies the quantity you enter by a price per unit. Check what that unit means before moving a result between tools.

Use the coverage stated for the product you intend to buy. Allow separately for cuts, openings, pattern matching, coats or waste when the calculator does not include them. Material cost estimates do not automatically include labour, delivery or a complete project budget.

Plan a painting purchase

Estimate litres using your measured area and product coverage, then enter the litres and price per litre to check material cost.

Common questions

Which comes first: quantity or cost?

Estimate the required material quantity first. Enter that result in the matching cost calculator with the price for the same unit, such as a litre or square metre.

Does every quantity calculator include waste?

No. Read the inputs and method on the specific page. Use a separate waste-allowance tool when needed, and avoid adding the same allowance twice.
