Why use this tool?
Get a quick sentence count while editing an essay, an article or a short passage. Read the text alongside the result when it contains abbreviations or unusual punctuation.
How the calculation works
Count punctuation-terminated segments and a final unterminated segment. Text remains in the browser. Words are groups of letters or numbers. Apostrophes, hyphens and underscores stay inside a word. Character counts use Unicode code points, which can differ from visible symbols. . ! ? are terminators. This heuristic can miscount abbreviations, decimals and other languages. Empty text counts as zero.

Frequently asked questions
Can abbreviations affect the count?
Yes. This is a punctuation-based estimate. Full stops in abbreviations, decimal numbers or other unusual text can produce a different total from a human reading.
Does the last sentence need a full stop?
No. A final piece of text without end punctuation is included. An empty box returns zero.
How do I copy the result or start again?
Select Copy result after running the tool to copy the displayed answer. Reset clears the text and result, so keep a separate copy of any text you want to save.
