A unique-word count gives you a different view of a draft from its total word count. It can help you compare vocabulary across passages of similar length.
How the calculation works
Count distinct word groups using selected case sensitivity. Text remains in the browser. Words are groups of letters or numbers. Apostrophes, hyphens and underscores stay inside a word. Character counts use Unicode code points, which can differ from visible symbols. Off lowercases keys; on keeps differently cased spellings distinct.

Practical tip
Compare drafts of a similar length: a longer passage will usually contain more different words.
Frequently asked questions
Does a repeated word count more than once?
No. Each different word is counted once. With case-sensitive matching off, “Cat” and “cat” share one entry; with it on, they are separate.
Does a higher unique-word count mean better writing?
No. The count describes vocabulary variety, but it does not assess clarity, accuracy or style. Compare similar passages and read them alongside the numbers.
How do I copy the result or start again?
Select Copy result after running the tool to copy the displayed answer. Reset clears the text and result, so keep a separate copy of any text you want to save.
